Researcher Spotlight #10: Ana M. Fernández
Q: What interests you most about this research centre?
A: The opportunity to continue my collaboration with Dr. Beck and the multidisciplinary nature of your team.
Q: Why do you think Visual Culture is important to study?
A: I believe that visual culture represents a broad interdisciplinary and flourishing field of study encompassing different approaches and perspectives that allow us to “portray” and, hopefully, better understand the “re-presentation” of the world(s) around us.
Q: Could you expand on your past studies and what inspired you to be an academic?
A: My academic studies mainly comprise of education, language and cultures, and second/foreign language teaching. During my doctoral studies, based on Bakthinain-sociocriticim, I explored a corpus of films from a Freirean-decolonial perspective, and this led me to co-create intercultural, multicultural, and multidisciplinary academic bridges, thereby expanding my horizon. This has been a transformative experience for me, and I am grateful to my supervisor, co-editors, authors, and all the scholars who offered me their support, such as Dr. Beck.
Bonus Q: if you could be a fruit, which one would you be?
A: Well, I have never thought about it. Let’s see, given the fact that I carry the legacy of my mum’s name, Ana, then, I guess, I should say “AnAna” (pineapple!).
