Researcher Spotlight #13: Ernesto Anaguano

The CEMVC is very excited to welcome a new member to our research team! Ernesto Anaguano, a PhD student in Hispanic Studies at the University of Western Ontario, has joined us as a new research assistant for Dr. Beck! To help you get to know Ernesto a bit better, we’ve asked some quick questions on his work and areas of interest.

–––––

Q: What interested you in working at the CEMVC?

A: I am interested in working on the preservation of the memory of Indigenous peoples across the Americas. I believe technology can be a powerful tool to preserve art, literature, and knowledge. Dr. Lauren Beck told me about a project focused on the attributes of mountains that have human and nonhuman characteristics in Indigenous thought, from Chile to Canada, and I am very excited to start working with her at the centre.

Q: How does the study of visual culture contribute to your research?

A: Currently, I am researching Indigenous literature in my home country, Ecuador. I see the study of visual culture as a valuable opportunity to enrich my understanding of how Indigenous knowledge is expressed not only through text, but also through images, symbols, and material culture. It also allows me to explore new methodologies and further develop my skills in the digital humanities, expanding the scope and impact of my research.

Q: And of course, a quick icebreaker: if you could eat any food every day, what would it be?

A: I could definitely eat avocados every day. There’s an avocado tree at my parents’ house, so when I was a child, I ate a lot of avocados, and I still love them just as much!
