Intern Intro #1: Miranda
Welcome back to the CEMVC! We are happy to share some exciting news! This semester, The Centre for Early Modern Visual Culture has had the opportunity to team up with the CEWIL ihub and partake in an exciting internship initiative. Here at the Centre, we had the chance to work with 70 interns from Mount Allison University. These students come from a variety of fields and topics of interest, however, through their internship, we have watched them learn and grow as interns of visual culture.
In their internship, students were required to participate in a variety of workshops regarding metadata generation, using the CAIRN database, EDI, etc. When they completed their workshops and associated quizzes, they were then each assigned a selection of images from the Aesop’s Fables collection and put the skills learned to work by collecting metadata and uploading their images to the database! We are very proud of all of their hard work.
As an added bonus, we thought it would be lovely to introduce some of our interns to the CEMVC community. This week, we will share a spotlight on Miranda King. Miranda is a fifth-year Bachelor of Arts student at Mount Allison University. She is planning to obtain her Honours in Visual and Material Culture Studies and a Major in Classics with a minor in Visual Communications and Culture and a certificate in Visual Literacy and Culture. Miranda’s research interests include: Roman household material culture, Roman households in the Eastern provinces, curatorial practices involving ancient Roman artifacts, and fan culture surrounding businesses and companies. In her free time Miranda does swing dancing and volunteers as an academic mentor for the VMCS department.
Q: What drew you to the CEWIL program/to work with the CEMVC?
A: I was drawn to the CEWIL program because I’m interested in finding creative ways to show that I have learned the course material. At this point my teachers know I can write an essay, so why not show them something else that I can do? Even though I’m more of a material culture fanatic and my research area is the classical period I’m still super excited to be with CEMVC because I’m working within a classical text collection.
Stay tuned with more CEMVC intern news coming soon!
